The Video Game Incubator Program (“Game Garage”) will give 10 (2 teams of 5) graduates or under employed recent graduates from across Canada the opportunity to be paid ($2,000 per month) for 3 months while they build a video game prototype, in a fully functional game studio in Prince Edward Island. Game Garage will run from June 4th to August 24th, 2012.

(Charlottetown, October 5th, 2011) The City of Charlottetown, under the Cultural Capital of Canada designation for 2011, is working with community partners to present ‘Celebrating Sense of Place (Spirit of Community)’, a conference on urban planning. The event, being held November 25-26, 2011 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, will involve high profile speaker presentations, panels and audience interaction on topics such as sustainability, green space linkages and architectural design, neighbourhoods, and arts, culture & heritage.

Five new media arts pieces will also be featured during the conference, with an inaugural public screening on Friday evening, November 25th as part of the ‘Through my Eyes’ Media Arts Legacy Series, another project under the Cultural Capital of Canada designation. The artists and filmmakers were also guided by the “Celebrating Sense of Place” theme when developing their productions.

Pre-registration will be required to attend the conference with more detailed information announced shortly. Details will also be posted on Charlottetown’s 2011 Cultural Capital of Canada website at www.ourculturalcapital.ca.

The “Celebrating Sense of Place (Spirit of Community)” Urban Planning Conference is presented under The Cultural Capital of Canada 2011 designation, a program of the Department of Canadian Heritage with additional funding by the City of Charlottetown and the Province of Prince Edward Island.

Digital Industry Applauds CMF Budget Boost for Interactive Media

Toronto, ON – On March 31st the Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced that the Canadian interactive digital media industry should see a projected $16M increase in the program budgets allocated to interactive production through both the experimental and convergent streams.

The additional funding comes in the form of an additional projected $6M of funding for the Experimental Stream, and a new $10 million incentive in the Convergent Stream. The full amount of the funding is contingent on the passing of a new federal budget after the election which will very likely allocate $100 million of federal government support for the program as was proposed in the recent budget proposal..

“ We are pleased that the CMF continues to listen and to understand the opportunities created through more substantial investments in the interactive media content and services,” said Ian Kelso, president of the Canadian Interactive Alliance / L’alliance interactive canadienne (CIAIC) and president & CEO, Interactive Ontario. “We all know what an overwhelming demand there was on the fund, and that many very innovative and potentially important projects had to be turned away due to lack of available capital.”

The Canada Media Fund released its preliminary programme allocations based solely on the $271 million of private sector commitments already secured for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Of that money, $24M was set aside for both English and French production in the Experimental Stream.

Additionally, $10M will be allocated to the Convergent Stream as part of a new digital media incentive: $7.3M now and a projected $2.7M after a federal budget is approved. This incentive will take the form of a non-repayable contribution to projects on a first come / first served basis. but is only applicable to projects where the broadcasters have exceeded their performance envelope spending by at least 25% or $20,000, whichever is greater.

The federal government has traditionally contributed $100 million to the CMF – bringing the total fund up to $371 million this year, but these monies have not yet been officially approved after the recent budget failed to pass before an election was called.

It is fully expected that, whatever the results of the coming election, the $100 million will be approved as the government’s share of this public / private fund and that an additional $9 million will be allocated to the Experimental Stream.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS – FILM and INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MEDIA WORKS

(Charlottetown, March 10th 2011) As part of Charlottetown’s 2011 Cultural Capital of Canada Designation, the Island Media Arts Coop (IMAC), Island Film Factory (IFF), and Interactive Media Alliance (IMA) are partnering to help in the creation of 5 new short film and interactive digital media works by Island producers. These works will become lasting documents of Charlottetown’s cultural identity. The chosen submissions will be announced at the Island Media Arts Festival in May, and the final works will be presented at a special screening event in October.

DEADLINE : April 15th, 2011

The Video Game Incubator Program (“Game Garage”) will give 10 (2 teams of 5) graduates or underemployed recent graduates from across Canada the opportunity to be paid ($2,000 per month) for 3months while they build a video game prototype, in a fully functional game studio in Prince EdwardIsland.

Applicants will be assessed and chosen based on their skills in game design, programming, andartistic ability. You are invited to submit a resume and appropriate design document, artwork or gamecode, as evidence that you have the necessary skills to work as part of a team of five people todevelop a product prototype.

The Program will provide the participants with an opportunity to work with individuals from the localgame development industry. There will be sessions planned with game industry experts to coach andmentor the participants throughout the process. The Incubator is an excellent opportunity to show theskills that you have to the various game studios.

Winners of the Impact Expo’s High School Art Competition…

An art competition was held at a recent Impact Expo hosted by the IT Sector Council and PEI Culture. Judges from the Video Game Art and Animation program at Holland College examined entries from the High Schools that participated in the Expo. The best entry from each High School won an honorable mention, and an overall winner won the Grand Prize.

Congratulations to Amy Su of Colonel Gray High School..! Amy wins an Xbox360 and a Futureshop giftcard.
